Liberation Day at Fort Thicketty-Saturday, July 26

The Cherokee Historical & Preservation Society, Inc. presents the 10th annual Liberation Day celebration at the Fort Thicketty historic site on Saturday, July 26. Since purchasing and rehabilitating the site in 2015, the Society has commemorated its liberation by the Patriots by lowering the British flag and raising the United States flag, along with wreath laying and guest speakers. This year’s event will open Fort Thicketty Historic Site as an official pull-off destination on the South Carolina Liberty Trail after additional upgrades and accessibility improvements.

Activities will begin at 9:30AM at Fort Thicketty followed by a special presentation and exhibit at the Cherokee County Museum from 12:00PM to 2:00PM

Step Back in Time: Voices of the Backcountry: 1775

Join us on Saturday, August 23, 2025, for a FREE immersive event commemorating the 250th anniversary of a pivotal moment in American history! On this very day in 1775, Rev. William Tennent of the Drayton, Tennent, Hart Expedition rode into Cherokee County, rallying settlers to support the Continental Association and the fight for liberty from British rule. But not everyone agreed—local Tories stood in opposition, sowing seeds of division that would tear communities and families apart, culminating in brutal battles across these lands in 1780 and 1781.

Experience history come alive through:

  • First-person storytelling by talented reenactors, bringing the voices of patriots, Tories, and everyday folks to life.
  • A guided bus tour of key historical sites in Cherokee County.
  • Your chance to "choose sides" and sign onto history-will you stand for independence or loyalty to the Crown?

This family-friendly event is open to the public at no cost-perfect for history buffs, students, and anyone curious about our nation's revolutionary roots. Check out the attached flyer for full details, and mark "Going" on the event page to reserve your spot!

Let's honor the past and reflect on the choices that shaped our future. See you there!
